EVANGELINE ADAMS: famous American astrologer who was arrested in New York City in 1914 on a charge of fortune-telling. She insisted on standing trial and came to court armed with reference books, expounded the principles of astrology and illustrated its practice by reading a blind chart that turned out to be that of the judge's son. The judge was so impressed by her character and intelligence that he ruled in her favor, concluding that "the defendant raises astrology to the dignity of an exact science." Thanks to Evangeline Adams astrology is no longer regarded as fortune-telling in New York City and elsewhere.
ASTROLOGY: literally means the study of the stars, the forerunner of astronomy. Current meaning: how human personality and behavior can be inferred from the position of the Sun, Moon and planets etc. at the time of a baby's first breath at birth. Astrologers generally believe that a baby is born at a time when its soul is in harmony with the astrological energies present at the time in the solar system. It is because of this divine correspondence that the science/art of astrology has been researched and practiced for thousands of years in many different cultures. Because of the repetition of planetary cycles coupled with the abundance of human population for generations, there continues to be many opportunities to personally verify the facts of astrology.
BIRTH CHART, NATAL CHART: names for the map of the heavens at the precise date, time and place of a person's birth, (usually recorded on the birth certificate.) This kind of chart is a primary tool of many professional astrologers. It has the location of the Sun, Moon and all the planets plus other important calculations on it. It is also a map of the soul's character and energy, and therefore is worthy of study. These charts can be ordered from many metaphysical bookstores or from computer services like Astro Communications Services (ACS), 5521 Ruffin Road, San Diego CA 92123; telephone 1-800-888-9983. When ordering ask for a tropical placidus natal chart. You want the chart done in English too, unless you know how to read astrological symbols.
HOROSCOPE: currently has two meanings: 1.) same as natal chart. 2.) generalized predictions based only upon the sign of the zodiac that the Sun was in when a person was born, i.e. "daily horoscopes" found in newspapers or popular magazines. (Also called Sun-sign astrology.) However entertaining and or helpful, this treatment presupposes that there are only twelve different types of people in the wide world.
Each of the planets represents astral energy of a certain type that corresponds to a desire or psychological urge in the unconscious mind.
An antidote is positive thoughts and feelings that can help harmonize a planet's energy, resulting in more good fortune in life.
SUN: is the strongest and most VITAL "planet." He represents the spark of God within, POWER, DESIRE FOR SIGNIFICANCE, vitality, pride, firmness, conscientiousness and self-esteem. His energy is also kindly, gracious, paternal, considerate, controlling and leadership oriented. Antidote: harmonious thoughts of vitality and power.
MOON: is a vital and magnetic "planet." She represents the unconscious mind and soul. Her energy is impressionable, mediumistic, yielding, CHANGEABLE, adaptable, dreamy, caring, emotional, DOMESTIC, maternal. Desires a home and family. Greatly influences strength of health. Antidote: harmonious Mars thoughts.
MERCURY: is an INTELLECTUAL planet and represents expression and communication of THOUGHT, PERCEPTION, language and calculation. It's energy is witty, quick, scientific, volatile, changeable, persuasive. Desires mental activity. Antidote: harmonious Jupiter thoughts.
VENUS: is a MILD, SOCIAL, affectionate, harmonious planet. She is magnetic, feminine, yielding and submissive, shy and sensitive. The planet of love is joyful, pliable, receptive, clinging, convivial and artistic. Desires to give and receive affection. Antidote: harmonious Sun and Saturn thoughts.
MARS: is a social, discordant, AGGRESSIVE planet. He governs the animal appetites and passions. The planet of war is hot, impulsive, rash, head-strong, assertive, unrelenting, and very ENERGETIC. Desires the preservation of the human race - sex. Antidote: harmonious Moon thoughts.
JUPITER: is a positive, harmonious, happy, lucky, RELIGIOUS and dignified planet. He is concerned with business and worship and tends towards generosity, hope, warmth, JOVIALITY, expansion, extravagance, spirituality, ABUNDANCE, optimism and honesty. Desires the opportunity to worship God. Antidote: harmonious Mercury thoughts.
SATURN: is discordant, selfish, fearful, hard working, practical, systematic, responsible and a business planet. He desires organization and is concerned with SECURITY, acquiring and keeping possessions. His energy is cold, traditional, crystallized and can bring lack and POVERTY. Desires SAFETY, wants to save for the future and is cautious. Demands maturity. Antidote: harmonious Venus and Sun thoughts.
URANUS: is the higher octave of Mercury and an intellectual planet who alternately attracts and repels. Uranus is the source of "personal magnetism" and is very INDIVIDUALISTIC, original, DISRUPTIVE, inventive, radical, erratic, unconventional, progressive, brilliant and a rebel. Wants to be different. Strong influence over intuition and clairvoyance. Antidote: harmonious Jupiter thoughts.
NEPTUNE: is the higher octave of Venus and is UTOPIAN and VISIONARY. She is sensitive and concerned with fantasy, escapism, drugs, spirituality, and tends to dissolve worldliness. She promotes schemes to gain wealth without work and governs feeling ESP and astral travel. Desires greater perfection in the world. The mistress of fog, ILLUSION and mystery. Antidote: harmonious Sun and Saturn thoughts.
PLUTO: is the higher octave of the Moon, (some astrologers think Mars). More than any other planet Pluto may manifest in two diametrically opposite ways, but it is always a powerful, transformative energy. On the higher side he is the finest and most spiritual of all, interested in UNIVERSAL WELFARE and in COOPERATING with others for the greatest good of all concerned. He is psychic and governs the ability to extend one's consciousness throughout the universe. On the lower side Pluto is drastically insidious, destructive and the victim of COERCION and crime. Antidote: harmonious Mars thoughts.
MIDHEAVEN: (MC) literally means the "middle of the sky" or about where the Sun is located at noon standard time. It is located at the top of the chart at the beginning of the 10th house. The MC represents a person's aspirations, ideals, reputation and PUBLIC RECOGNITION; it is usually a factor in one's choice of career and purpose in life.
ASCENDANT: (Asc) is also called the rising sign because it is the point of the zodiac on the eastern horizon at the time and place of one's birth. It is located on the left side of the chart at the beginning of the 1st house. The Asc represents the PERSONALITY and SELF-IMAGE. It indicates the type of first impression a person makes on others.
NORTH NODE (of the Moon): is the point that is listed in the ephemeris and on the natal chart. It esoterically represents qualities that need to be developed in this lifetime. Also called the Dragon's Head.
SOUTH NODE (of the Moon): is always located opposite the North Node in the natal chart. It esoterically represents strong qualities within the person, of which the negative ones need to be eliminated or released. Also called the Dragon's Tail.
HOUSES: The natal chart is divided into twelve sections and each deals with particular parts of a person's external life and environment. The houses are labeled one through twelve. Compared to the face of a clock, the first house is in the 9 to 8 o'clock position, the second house is in the 8 to 7 o'clock area etc. There are different ways to calculate the beginning (cusp) of some of the houses. The most accepted system is called Placidus. Generally speaking, the angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th & 10th) are 4 times stronger than the weakest houses (2nd, 3rd, 5th & 6th). Planets in a house add more strength to the house. Even empty houses have some power.
FIRST HOUSE: governs everything to do with the PERSONALITY; health, length of life, temperament and disposition, personal prowess, coordination, the physical body, one's childhood and moral qualities.
SECOND HOUSE: WEALTH, VALUES, personal property, income and debts.

SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC: The tropical zodiac is divided into twelve equal sections which are called signs, starting with the sign Aries. Each sign is measured as a 30 degree piece of a 360 degree circle in the sky. The sun is at the beginning (0 degrees) of Aries on or about March 21, at the beginning of Spring. The sun would be at about 15 degrees of Aries on about April 5 or 6. Consult your natal chart or an astrologer to find out the sign and degree of each of your planets in the zodiac. The following timetable is approximate for the location of the sun in the zodiac.
No sign of the zodiac is good or bad. None can be singled out as better or worse than the others. Each has its own special possibilities for good and evil. There is a legitimate need and function for each of the signs in life. The object is to focus on the constructive use of the energy of each of the signs of the zodiac. Each sign is ruled by a planet.
Furthermore, each sign of the zodiac is divided into three, equal, ten degree sections, called decanates. Each has a special, spiritual meaning. For example, I suggest you look up both the general meaning of the sign and the special meaning for your Sun, Moon, Ascendant and Midheaven in your natal chart. Learn lessons important to your success and happiness.

ASPECTS: angular relationship between two planets or important points in the natal chart, one of a set of specific angles. Literally how the planets look at or interact with each other, in friendly or unfriendly ways. The major aspects and their meanings follow in order of their relative strength and importance. See also Parallel and Contra-parallel of declination.
Conjunction: 0 degrees between planets. Indicates POWER, energy and PROMINENCE.
Opposition: 180 degrees between planets. SEPARATION, awareness. Conflict between urges: needs cooperation and compromise.
Square: 90 degree angle. OBSTACLES, stress.
Trine: 120 degree angle. Ease, harmony, good LUCK.
Sextile: 60 degree angle. OPPORTUNITY.
AFFLICTION: the condition of a planet that receives difficult aspects like squares or oppositions from other planets, especially Saturn or Mars, or that is conjunct or parallel to Saturn or Mars. The most difficult afflictions are ones that affect the Sun, Moon or Ascendant. A planet that has many hard aspects and few or no harmonious aspects (like trines and sextiles to other planets, or conjunctions to Jupiter or Venus) is said to be heavily afflicted.
ANTIDOTES: are types of harmonious thoughts and feelings that, when engaged in, can help heal an afflicted planet. For example, for an afflicted Mercury, harmonious Jupiter thoughts and feelings are focused on like devotion to God, positive outlook on life, jolly feelings etc. A powerful tool for self-improvement. See the book MENTAL ALCHEMY by C C Zain for more information. Available free on line, see Book 9, click here
ASTRODYNES: A mathematical way to measure the
strengths, weaknesses, harmony and discord in a natal chart.
Knowledge is power. This information is the starting point in helping
you to utilize your strengths in the most constructive ways. Always
focus positively on your most powerful planets, signs and houses.
These will represent the major themes of your life. Also take
advantage of your most harmonious energies, to attract good fortune
etc. Astrodynes help you determine the most important (strongest)
areas of a chart. Greatly assists you in accurately analyzing a
chart, like a professional astrologer. Highly recommended. Astrodyne
report available from Astro Communications Services 800-888-9983, ask
for option "Astro". For an explanation of the theory, usefulness and
calculation of astrodynes etc see the book STELLAR HEALING by C C
Zain available

them if you
want to purchase a computer program that can calculate astrodynes for
a chart.
ASTROLOGERS: a good one can help you gain an overview of your chart and of your strengths and weaknesses, thus putting the many different pieces into perspective. Because all astrologers are not created equal, many people like to get recommendations from friends, ask for references and or pray for guidance before selecting an astrologer. I believe the best approach is to become your own astrologer.
CHART COMPARISON LIST: astrological match up of how the energies of two people mix in a relationship, for example. Many insights can be shed on how the pair might interact and get along with each other, if it is likely to be a short or long term involvement, the likelihood of it developing into a romance, friendship, marriage etc. The chart shows how all the planets of one person's natal chart interact with (aspect) all of the planets of the other person's chart. This type of chart can also be helpful for better understanding parent-child relationships, business partnerships etc. Available from Astro Communications Services, (ACS) 800-888-9983. A good book for looking up the meaning of the astrological aspects between the two people in the chart is HOW TO HANDLE YOUR HUMAN RELATIONS by Lois Sargent.
CONSTELLATIONS: groups of "fixed" stars that anciently were assigned names suggestive of patterns in the sky. Myths about the constellations helped a culture teach morals to its youth. Sidereal astrology is based on the constellations and is practiced by Hindu (Vedic) astrologers. Their focus is on making predictions about a person's future and generally is more fatalistic in its viewpoint of life as opposed to Western natal astrology which predominantly seeks psychological insights about a person.
DEGREES: There are 360 degrees in a circle, 30 degrees in a sign of the zodiac. There are 60 minutes in one degree. JUP 06Gem50 means Jupiter is at 6 degrees 50 minutes of Gemini.
EPHEMERIS: a publication or book that lists the positions of the Sun, Moon and planets for each day of the year or century. Some give the position at noon, others give the position at midnight. A valuable reference. For the current year, get Jim Maynard's calendar called Celestial Influences. For the entire century get the Ephemeris by the Rosicrucian Fellowship.
GOD GIVEN FREE WILL AND SELF-DETERMINATION: continues to exist. Astrology provides you with a personal, inner weather report. Is this Saturday going to be best for a picnic, work or a movie? Even if your inner weather is not favorable, you still get to decide how you will express your energy, what your attitude with be, and how you will choose to react to others. Of course, the more people thoughtlessly react to life, the easier it is for astrology to predict what their behavior will be and if it will be constructive or negative. As the years go by, and a person learns, grows more independent, and spiritually evolves, the harder it becomes for astrology to predict what that person's character, goals and behavior will be. But it is still nice to know what type of energies you and or others are dealing with. Remember, energy isn't good or bad, it just wants to be released or expressed. All energies have their proper, constructive use.
MUNDANE ASTROLOGY: also called political astrology. It is devoted to the study of planetary cycles and patterns as they are reflected in world events, cultural trends etc.
ORB (of influence): the radius within which an aspect is considered to be potent. The conservative range for the major aspects listed previously is up to plus or minus 6 to 8 degrees. For example a conjunction would exist between two planets which were from 0 to 6 or 8 degrees away from each other in a natal chart. The closer (smaller) the orb, the stronger the aspect is. For transits and progressions use a 1 degree orb.
PARALLEL AND CONTRAPARALLEL OF DECLINATION: are aspects, similar in meaning and power to a conjunction, but each has to be within 1 degree of orb. A parallel exists when two planets have the same declination and are on the same side of the celestial equator. A contra-parallel (sometimes it is also referred to as a parallel) exists when two planets have the same declination, with one north and the other south of the celestial equator.
PROGRESSIONS: Major progressions are also called secondary or "a day for a year" progressions, (and the progressed Midheaven should be calculated using the solar arc method.) This is a system used for the timing of events and for predicting the likelihood of future circumstances in a person's life. Extensive research has shown these calculations to be valid. Progressed aspects can be interpreted in the same manner as transiting aspects, but they last much longer. The progressed aspects must be within 1 degree of orb to be strong enough to attract an event into a person's life. Pay particular attention to the progressed Sun.
RULERSHIPS: An ancient system whereby the signs of the zodiac are assigned to planets on the basis of affinity or "familiarity." A planet is said to rule or be the Lord of a sign. For example, the Sun rules Leo, the Moon rules Cancer. Also Mercury rules computers, Mars rules eating, Neptune rules alcoholic beverages etc. Everything in life has a rulership. A good reference book is THE RULERSHIP BOOK by Rex Bills.
TRANSITS: literally means to pass over. The current movement of the Sun, Moon and planets in the heavens and how we are currently being influenced by these transits. For example, transiting Jupiter (at 21 degrees Sagittarius) is trining natal Mercury (at 21 degrees Leo). This would generally indicate a good time for communication, seeing the big picture, and being optimistic, especially about religious matters, traveling and teaching. Pay special attention to the longer lasting transits by the slow moving planets: Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. They are powerful, so check on their current location in an ephemeris to determine what houses of your natal chart they are in and for how long, and what major aspects they are making with planets in your natal chart. The orb for aspects between transits and natal planets is usually plus or minus 1 degree. See recommended book list. You can also purchase a transit report like Transits of the Year, by Robert Hand, which is available from Astrodienst on the web at http://www.astro.com/samples/sp_tn_e.htm
